UK-based Ashe Converting Equipment is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, marking five decades of growth from a specialist drive control systems manufacturer to an international supplier of slitting and rewinding machinery.

Founded by John Godbold in 1976, the Ipswich-based company now offers equipment for narrow, mid and wide web applications, serving sectors including packaging, labels, paper, aluminium, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food production. The company has completed more than 1250 installations worldwide and operates through a network of global distributors as well as a US subsidiary.

The family-owned business remains under the leadership of John Godbold, who continues as managing director. His three sons hold senior roles within the company: James Godbold oversees production as works director, while Matthew and Simon Godbold lead sales for wide web and narrow/mid web machinery respectively. Members of the third generation have also joined the business.

Ashe’s origins lie in the manufacture of control systems for slitting and rewinding equipment. During its early years, the company supplied control panels and commissioned machines for Titan before developing its own range of rewinders and web-handling systems. The launch of its first complete slitter rewinder at drupa in 1990 marked a significant step in the company’s expansion into machinery manufacturing.

Over the following decades, Ashe expanded both its manufacturing footprint and product portfolio. The company now operates from a 45,000sqft manufacturing facility in Ipswich, producing around 80% of machine components in-house. Investment in CNC machining, automation and advanced manufacturing equipment has supported its growth and product development.

The US market has become increasingly important to the business. Ashe established a presence in Vermont in 2007 and today North America accounts for between 40% and 50% of annual business, according to the company.

Customisation remains a central feature of Ashe’s product strategy. Its portfolio includes the Sapphire, Diamond, Jade, Emerald, Opal and Solitaire ranges, covering applications from narrow web label converting to wide web flexible packaging production. The company says many of its systems are designed to handle low-tension materials while providing advanced automation and inspection capabilities.

Looking ahead, Ashe is developing a new 10m-wide slitter rewinder for its wide web range and a digital converting system with inline flexo printing for narrow web applications. The latter is expected to be launched at Labelexpo Europe next year.

Reflecting on the company’s development, John Godbold highlighted its international focus and family succession as key achievements.

When asked about his proudest achievement, he said: “Training my three sons to be businesspeople, and creating an international company which serves the global market. We’ve been selling abroad since day one, so it has always been an international business. I’m also proud that my grandchildren are working in the company.”

Mr Godbold said increasing automation, web handling technology and inspection systems are likely to play an increasingly important role in the future of the converting industry.
