Paper and packaging manufacturer Mondi has opened a new packaging production facility in Pittsburgh, expanding its manufacturing presence in the United States.
The facility produces a range of paper bags used across sectors including eCommerce, food, animal feed, construction materials, and chemicals. It consolidates operations previously based in Wellsburg, West Virginia, and Oakdale, Pennsylvania, and introduces automated production systems aimed at improving efficiency and output quality.
The Pittsburgh site is expected to increase Mondi’s production capacity in the US, with a particular focus on the growing eCommerce market. The plant includes automated lines and printing capabilities designed to support large-scale production, shorter lead times, and consistent product standards. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to produce up to 300 million paper bags annually.
Rory Taylor, president of paper bags Americas at Mondi, said the new site strengthens the company’s ability to serve customers and adapt to changing market demands by centralising production in a modern facility.
Nedim Nisic, vice president and general manager for eCommerce at Mondi, commented: “Demand in eCommerce is increasingly shaped by high‑volume, fast‑moving applications that require flexibility, short lead times and consistent performance. The new Pittsburgh plant allows us to better align our sustainable paper‑based eCommerce portfolio with these specific customer requirements. The investment underlines Mondi’s long-term commitment to the US market and to sustainable growth within its eCommerce business.”
The facility is expected to employ around 170 people by the end of the year across operational, technical, and customer-facing roles.
