Packaging manufacturer Coveris has acquired the business and assets of GEFO Folienbetrieb, a German producer of cast polypropylene (CPP).
The acquisition expands Coveris’ position in speciality CPP applications and grows its operation in this space with its current and only CPP extrusion facility in Kufstein, Austria, operating at full capacity amid increasing customer demand.
Coveris said that the integration of GEFO’s business will increase its CPP production capacity and broaden its product offering in areas including retort packaging, lidding films, bakery bags, medical packaging and other non-food applications.
Coveris added that the investment will also strengthen its recyclable packaging portfolio and support its “No Waste” sustainability strategy, while helping customers prepare for regulatory changes including the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements.
According to the company, the European CPP market is expected to grow by about 3% a year, while more specialised segments such as retort, medical and lidding applications are forecast to expand by more than 4% annually. Coveris believes this growth is being driven by sustainability requirements and the replacement of non-recyclable materials.
“GEFO is an excellent addition to our existing network and further strengthens our sustainability strategy,” said Christian Kolarik, CEO of Coveris. “Demand for recyclable mono-material packaging continues to grow across Europe, making the expansion of our CPP capabilities for high-performance applications a logical next step. Through this acquisition, we are strengthening our production base and enhancing our ability to provide customers with innovative and sustainable packaging solutions that meet both evolving market needs and future regulatory requirements.”
CPP films are used in flexible packaging and are valued for their recyclability and compatibility with mono-polymer packaging structures.
