Thornton Print has expanded its production capabilities with the installation of a second Mark Andy Performance Series flexographic press at its Newcastle-based facility. The investment aims to increase capacity, enhance flexibility, and streamline operations following rising demand for high-quality label and packaging solutions.
The company has operated since 1893 and now provides a range of print services including sheet-fed offset, digital, and flexographic printing. The latest addition is a Mark Andy Performance P7 press, which complements the existing P5 model installed in 2015.
Allan Bell, operations director at Thornton Print, explained that the company initially selected Mark Andy technology to transition from rotary letterpress to UV-flexo printing. “The P5 gave us the best opportunity to succeed from day one, particularly with its strong integration with our pre-press investments,” said Mr Bell.
Used primarily for self-adhesive label production, the P5 is equipped with an 8-colour, 17-inch print width, UV drying, and die cutting. It also includes a web translator – often referred to as the “Gizmo” – which enables the production of booklet-style labels. These multi-layer labels are increasingly in demand in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, where regulatory requirements necessitate large volumes of on-pack information, stated Mark Andy.
Based on the success of the P5, the company opted for the more advanced P7 model to provide additional capacity and operational resilience. Also an 8-colour, 17-inch press, the fully servo-driven P7 includes UV and hot air curing systems, cold foil, emboss/deboss capability, and a sheeting station. It also features automation upgrades such as a Martin Automatic MBS unwind/splice system, allowing non-stop production and reducing material waste.
“The Performance P7 has significantly increased our throughput and allows us to dedicate it to paper and board jobs,” Mr Bell noted. “We now treat embellishment techniques like foiling, embossing, and reverse-side printing as standard offerings, not niche features.”
The addition of the P7 supports Thornton’s broader strategy to remain competitive in a market where brands are seeking greater shelf appeal and sustainable packaging solutions. Thornton Print holds certifications including ISO, BRCGS, and FSC, and serves a range of sectors including beverages, confectionery, and household goods.
