Corrugated packaging manufacturer Ablebox has seen its operations certified as carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust.

The company employs nearly 80 people across its sites in Yeovil and Henstridge, working with a wide range of brands including Wyke Farms Cheese and Bulldog Skincare.

It has already installed energy efficient lighting in its Henstridge factory and is planning a review of all lighting on its Yeovil site to further increase efficiency, as well as reducing emissions by moving to 100% renewable utilities providers.

The company has a carbon reduction plan and has committed to continually reducing emissions. Ongoing reductions will be achieved through the use of two fully electric Tesla Semi trucks and Ablebox also has plans to install a waste steam recovery system to capture and reuse energy used in its factory.

As a result of these efforts the company’s organisational carbon footprint was verified by the Carbon Trust to the internationally recognised standard for carbon neutrality, PAS 2060.

‘This certification demonstrates our commitment to our customers and the local community that we are a responsible and proactive business, always seeking to do better, especially when it comes to the environment,’ said Ablebox executive chairman Sam Ainsworth. ‘Our team has been really supportive of the process, and we hope to inspire our customers, suppliers and competitors to go carbon neutral as well.

‘We are now looking at certifying our products as carbon neutral, offering low carbon options for our customers in the same way that our products can currently be FSC certified.’

Morgan Jones, associate director of certification, at the Carbon Trust added: ‘The Carbon Trust is pleased to certify Ablebox to PAS 2060, demonstrating the carbon neutrality of its operations. The initiatives that Ablebox has undertaken, and that it plans to roll-out, demonstrates the company’s commitment to becoming a more sustainable business in the packaging sector.’
