Innovia Films’ research and development centre

Innovia Films showed off its latest development in coating technology at Labelexpo in Brussels the UltraFoil as well as announcing a major investment at its UK site.

The new top coated facestock films combine the die-cutting, dispensability and optics associated with BOPP label films, and also enhanced cold foil and superior fine tone printing performance.

Richard Southward, market development manager, explained, ‘Innovia’s UltraFoil facestock films offer designers and brand owners more options for intricate eye catching graphics.  Label printers will appreciate the films’ on-press performance with wide ink, process and foiling compatibility.  These films are ideal for labelling rigid or semi-squeezable containers.’

UltraFoil films have been developed to meet customer demand for labelling products that have cold foil decoration requirements. As printing, conversion and decoration techniques become more advanced, the company feels it is important to offer a product that can mirror these trends and support aesthetic appearance, intricate images and fonts.

Compatible with a wide range of cold foil adhesives, UltraFoil films are also suitable for use with both silver and coloured foils. The new films are available in clear, UltraFoil CFA and white variants, UltraFoil WFA.

The investment, a £20 million investment package, will be for the installation of additional Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film capacity and a gas turbine at its UK site.

The additional BOPP capacity will assist us in meeting the increasing worldwide demand for our speciality grades of BOPP film. The investment is expected to increase our global output by a further 10%, and will support our research and development teams to accelerate their product and market development introductions.

The decision to invest in a gas turbine was made a few months ago and preparation work on the Wigton site is already well in hand.  The turbine will improve the company’s UK energy efficiency and performance and will reduce the carbon footprint of all products produced at the Wigton site by 20%, including our leading renewable and compostable NatureFlex films.
