Innovia Films has announced the launch of P2G, a clear biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film developed for flow wrap applications in fresh produce packaging, including pre-prepared vegetables.

According to the company, P2G is designed to support freshness and product quality throughout the supply chain. The film has been engineered with specific gas transmission properties intended to help manage respiration in fresh produce. By regulating gas exchange, the material aims to help maintain freshness and extend shelf life, with the potential to reduce food waste.

P2G is heat-sealable on both sides, which the company says enables consistent sealing performance in packaging operations. It also offers optical clarity to maintain product visibility at retail. In addition, the film is designed to retain puncture and impact resistance at low temperatures, providing protection during transportation and storage under varying climatic conditions.

“P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging,” said Megan Hinkley, senior product manager – packaging at Innovia Films. “It combines functionality, reliability, and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers, packers, and consumers, while supporting the industry’s transition to more circular packaging solutions.”

Innovia Films states that P2G is a mono-material polypropylene solution that can be recycled within existing polypropylene waste streams. The company says this recyclability, combined with the film’s shelf-life extension properties, may contribute to reducing food waste across the supply chain.

The film has been developed in line with the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). According to the company, P2G supports the regulation’s objectives to increase recyclability and reduce packaging waste, as brand owners work toward fully recyclable packaging targets by 2030.

P2G can also incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced ISCC-certified polymers through a mass balance approach. Innovia Films says this allows customers to work toward recycled content targets while maintaining required performance standards for fresh produce packaging.

The company states that extending the shelf life of fresh produce can help lower the overall carbon footprint of the food supply chain by reducing waste. Decreased spoilage may reduce the need for additional production, transport, and restocking, which in turn can lower associated greenhouse gas emissions.

P2G is also printable for branding and product information. Innovia Films says the film is suitable for packaging applications including leafy greens, chopped vegetables, and other fresh produce.
