Italian flexo prepress specialist Mavigrafica has expanded its production capacity with the installation of a second Flexcel NX Ultra platemaking solution from Miraclon at its new facility in Florence. The investment builds on the company’s adoption of solvent-free platemaking, following the installation of Italy’s first Flexcel NX Ultra 35 system at its Milan site 18 months ago.

The installation brings the company’s total number of Flexcel NX Systems to six. The NX Ultra technology, which uses a water-wash process and is free from solvents and VOCs, aligns with the company’s stated focus on sustainable production without compromising on output quality or efficiency.

“We’re seeing increasing demand for environmentally responsible production across the packaging supply chain,” said Maurizio Vitale, founder of Mavigrafica. “With Flexcel NX Ultra, we’re able to meet that demand while maintaining the high plate quality and performance our customers expect. This second installation reflects both market needs and our own long-term sustainability goals.”

Mavigrafica is certified to ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, and 14064-1 (carbon footprint) standards. The addition of the Ultra 42 system enables the company to scale up sustainable platemaking at a time when regulatory and customer expectations around environmental impact are increasing.

The Flexcel NX Ultra Solution combines Miraclon’s NX System with Ultra plates and a water-based processing system, designed to deliver consistent, high-quality flexo plates while eliminating the use of solvents, explained Miraclon. According to Mavigrafica, there is no difference between on-press performance from traditional NX plates. The company added that the system offers significant productivity gains – with a single operator able to produce up to 30 plates in one shift.

Founded in 1997, Mavigrafica has maintained a 17-year partnership with Miraclon, having been the first in Italy to install a Flexcel NX System following its debut at drupa in 2008.

“Our growth has been closely linked to Miraclon’s technology,” said Mr Vitale. “Their team has been a reliable partner throughout — responsive, proactive, and genuinely interested in our business objectives.”
