UK label converter The Label Makers has installed new roll-handling automation equipment from Martin Automatic on its latest MPS flexographic press, aiming to increase efficiency and reduce waste across its operations.
The family-run business, established over 60 years ago in Bradford, West Yorkshire, added a Martin MBS automatic unwind butt splicer and an LRD automatic transfer rewinder to a 10-colour MPS EF-430 press. This is the third MPS press at the facility, and the new Martin equipment is expected to enhance both long and short print runs by improving material handling and minimising downtime.
Jamie Hyde, operations manager for The Label Makers, explained that the decision to invest in Martin Automatic technology was driven by a need to reduce waste on partially used rolls and improve press efficiency. “We knew we could make significant cost savings,” said Mr Hyde. “Continuous running also helps reduce operator fatigue and boosts overall productivity.”
The Martin MBS and LRD units were selected for their reliability and straightforward mechanical design. With less reliance on complex electronics, the machines are designed for durability and easier maintenance. According to Mr Hyde, this approach supports the company’s long-standing philosophy of combining skilled personnel with robust, fit-for-purpose technology.
The installation initially presented challenges due to space and ceiling height restrictions at the Bradford site. However, Martin Automatic adapted the equipment design to suit the available space. Chris Chappel, sales manager at Martin Automatic, noted that the compact configurations – including a reduced-height festoon and a 90-degree web turn bar – allowed seamless integration without compromising performance.
Now operational, the automation system has been well received by The Label Makers’ production team. The equipment handles various substrates including paper, film, laminate, and board, with web widths up to 660mm and roll diameters of up to 1250mm. Running speeds of up to 300m/min are supported.
For typical runs of 50,000m printed on 4000m rolls, the MBS system can save approximately 80 metres of material per roll change, explained Martin Automatic. Beyond material savings, avoiding press stops helps maintain print consistency and reduces the time needed to regain full-speed operation.
Managing director of The Label Makers Zenna Parfaniuk noted that these gains are valuable, especially in high-end embellished label production. “Every improvement in efficiency helps, and if it also improves quality, that’s a double win,” she said. The company is already considering retrofitting its other MPS presses with Martin Automatic systems and further enhancing automation, including waste extraction.
Mr Chappel concluded: “We’re pleased to contribute to The Label Makers’ ongoing success and look forward to future collaboration. With skilled labour increasingly hard to find, automation like this offers a practical way forward for consistent and efficient production.”
