Ink manufacturer Siegwerk and supplier of linerless label systems Ravenwood Packaging have entered into a partnership focused on advancing linerless label technology across the packaging sector. The collaboration aims to support broader adoption of linerless labels, which offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional pressure-sensitive labels.
Unlike conventional labels, linerless labels do not use a silicone-coated release liner, helping to reduce material usage and waste. The format also allows for higher label yield per roll, which can lead to cost savings in storage and transport.
As part of the agreement, Siegwerk has developed two BPA-free (Bisphenol A – a synthetic chemical used in some plastics and epoxy resins) release varnishes that are now approved for use with Ravenwood’s linerless label systems. The varnishes meet regulatory requirements including the Nestlé Guidance, as well as the Swiss and German Ink Ordinances, making them suitable for packaging in the nutrition, pharmaceutical, and hygiene sectors.
The German Ink Ordinance (GIO) establishes safety standards for printing inks used in food packaging. By complying with GIO and similar frameworks, Siegwerk’s varnishes align with international safety and migration requirements.
Both companies plan to coordinate marketing activities and explore future areas of technical collaboration. A joint presentation is scheduled for the upcoming Labelexpo event, where they will showcase the combined solution to industry stakeholders.
