Italian manufacturer of modular in-line flexographic printing machines Lombardi Converting Machinery has unveiled Smartline, a new flexo press for the label sector. The launch took place at the company’s open house event at its headquarters in Brescia from the 27-30 May.

The new Smartline press builds on Lombardi’s Synchroline platform. It offers a solution for producing pressure-sensitive paper and film labels, accommodating web widths of up to 450mm, with a printing width of 430mm. Featuring servo-driven components, Smartline ensures accurate web tension control, making it ideal for high-quality label production with minimal downtime, explained the company. The system includes a servo-driven unwinder and infeed modules, eight UV flexo printing stations, a die-cutting station, and an outfeed/rewinding station, all designed for efficient, continuous operation.

The Smartline press features a rail-mounted system which incorporates key modules such as delam/relam, an air-assisted turn bar, and cold foil units – expanding the variety of label finishes that can be offered. Additionally, the company said the press’s mechatronic design reduces the number of transmission parts like gears and belts, helping to lower maintenance costs and maximise machine uptime.

Smartline has been described by the company as a “remarkable” achievement in the label printing industry. According to Lombardi the machine offers unparalleled modularity, allowing businesses to print labels in a highly customised and flexible manner. The company added that the Smartline range is versatile, enabling businesses to meet a variety of label printing needs. It exceeds previous standards, the company concluded.

The first Smartline machine has gone to Print Panache in India.
