Manufacturer of die-cutting tools Wink has upgraded its SmartGap adjustable anvil system with new stability-boosting features and digital enhancements.

With SmartGap, Wink says it provides a system that combines precision, stability, flexibility, and digital expandability. Its improved design, precise adjustment, low-maintenance operation, and suitability for demanding materials means it sets a new standard in precision, reliability, and future-proofing, the company claims.

SmartGap uses a specially developed bearing and adjustment system that provides “exceptionally” high stability, Wink explained. The gap can be positioned in 0.5-micron steps and adjusted individually on both cylinder sides, whether at standstill or during operation. It is claimed that this enables safe processing of demanding film materials such as PET. The system’s stable construction also supports large working widths and ensures consistent quality at high production speeds, making it well suited for high-volume and continuous applications.

 In operation, SmartGap generates almost no heat, eliminating the need for oil or lubricants. This provides a clean production environment, reduces maintenance costs, and increases machine availability. An improved sliding block design boosts stability while reducing die-cutting pressure, increasing process reliability and extending tool life, Wink added.

SmartGap is suitable for a range of applications, including label production, packaging, and the processing of special materials. According to the manufacturer, the technology’s high precision makes it particularly valuable for thin PET substrates, and it can be used in both rotary and semi-rotary applications. High-speed capability and large working widths offer economic advantages for complex series production.

Two versions of the system are available: SmartGap Advance, the basic model for precise gap adjustment; and SmartGap Touch, the digital version with Industry 4.0 capability. Wink said SmartGap Touch supports modern control, code scanning, process monitoring, and documentation for more efficient and transparent production.
