Packaging and paper company Mondi has officially started operations at its newly converted containerboard mill in Duino, Italy. The launch follows a €200 million (£172 million) investment to transform an existing paper machine into one that produces recycled containerboard.
More than 70 representatives from corrugated packaging companies across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa attended an event to mark the mill’s operational start-up.
The Duino mill is expected to produce up to 420,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard annually once it reaches full capacity. The product range includes waste-based fluting and testliner in various weights, with reel widths ranging from 0.95 to 3.35 metres.
The facility is located near key transport routes, allowing it to supply both local and international markets efficiently, explained Mondi. It is now part of Mondi’s broader network of six containerboard mills worldwide.
Klaus Peller, chief operating officer of Mondi Containerboard, commented: “Launching this mill on time shows the strength and commitment of our team and is illustrative of our long-term promise to our containerboard customers. With this paper machine, we are investing in their future too – ensuring resilient supply, sustainable packaging products, great service and the opportunity to grow together.”
The investment expands Mondi’s production capacity in recycled packaging materials, which the company says supports its efforts to offer sustainable packaging solutions across a variety of applications.
