Michelman has introduced two new barrier coatings that it says are bio-based, plastic-free and support recyclability and compostability for fibre-based retail food packaging applications.

Nuvita Life 4002 is a heat seal coating that imparts oil and grease resistance. It is printable when using solvent based ink systems, with those in flexo and gravure likely to be most successful. The product provides strong seals over a wide sealing window and is overcoatable, said Michelman.

Meanwhile, Nuvita Life 4605 is an overprint varnish (OPV) that imparts oil and grease resistance, water resistance, and moisture barrier performance.

Both products are Single Use Plastics Directive compliant and are completely bio-based in dry film. They are also crease resistant and engineered for compatibility with vertical form-fill-seal processing lines. Target applications include pouches and sachets for dry foods, flow wraps for food bars and envelopes for tea.

Michelman’s global marketing director for packaging, Lori Gobris, said the products unlock “new possibilities for paperisation in retail food applications”. She added: “These forward-looking technologies allow fibre-based packaging to deliver the high barrier performance converters and brands need while supporting compliance with regulations targeting plastic pollution and waste reduction.”
