Packaging-technology company SmartSolve has unveiled PureNil 0, a plastic-free, 100% bio-based, flushable, and paper-based pouching material aimed at brands seeking zero-waste, fossil-fuel-free alternatives to conventional packaging.

The launch marks the debut of SmartSolve’s new PureNil Series, which the company says focuses on materials that go beyond recyclability toward complete biodegradability and environmental safety. SmartSolve described the development as timely, aligning with a growing global shift toward products that prioritise human health, environmental responsibility, and reduced dependence on plastics.

PureNil 0 is made entirely from renewable resources, eliminating synthetic polymers and petroleum-based inputs. According to SmartSolve, this separates it from “eco-friendly” packaging solutions that still rely partly on plastics. The material is designed to biodegrade naturally and can be safely flushed or composted, offering multiple end-of-life options that simplify disposal for consumers.

“By providing a 100% bio-based, plastic-free alternative, SmartSolve is giving brands the tools to make measurable progress toward environmental goals without sacrificing product integrity,” said Alex Abbott, chief revenue officer at SmartSolve.

PureNil 0 disperses in water without releasing harmful microplastics and meets the INDA GD4 and IWSFG criteria for flushability, said the company. Consumers can choose to recycle the packaging with paper, compost it, or flush it safely, reducing confusion and improving the overall sustainability experience.

SmartSolve emphasised that the material’s biodegradability extends to accidental release in natural environments. It breaks down rapidly without contributing to ocean plastics or landfill waste. Vidhu Nagpal, director of flexible packaging at SmartSolve, described the launch as “a breakthrough for brands looking to connect with today’s consumers.”

PureNil 0 has been designed for dry and powdered products and is compatible with standard form, fill, and seal machinery. SmartSolve has confirmed that the material is printable using conventional flexographic processes and has recommended using water-based inks. Its printability allows brands to integrate it easily into existing production lines while maintaining high-quality graphics and branding. It is also suitable for small unit-dose applications, opening opportunities across sectors such as household cleaning, personal care, confectionery, healthcare, and agricultural products.

PureNil 0 is also the company’s first direct food contact-certified material, produced under ISO and FSSC 22000 standards. This certification enables use in applications such as confectionery and single-serve food packaging. SmartSolve said the development offers a viable path for food brands to deliver plastic-free packaging without compromising on safety or compliance.

“Brands now have a scalable and commercially available alternative that’s fully bio-based, plastic-free, and water-soluble,” said Jon Jakubowski, CEO of SmartSolve. “This is the kind of innovation that will help our partners lead in the sustainable packaging movement.”
